Chronic Pain Beit Shemesh:

If you have been dealing with chronic pain, you know how limiting it can be on your daily activities. It is likely that you have been sidelined from doing most of the things you love, and even from spending time with the people you love.
Overcoming chronic pain is a journey, but with the correct treatments and resources your quality of life can improve.

Chronic Pain is an unpleasant sense of discomfort that lasts over a long period of time, at least 6 months. We see that chronic pain ranges from a low level of discomfort to excruciating levels pain, and anywhere in between.

One can contrast chronic pain with acute pain, which has a sudden onset; typically related to a specific event or trauma. The fact that acute pain resolves more quickly than chronic pain should not deter one from trying acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for their chronic pain, because it has been helpful for so many patients’ quality of life.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are effective treatment options for chronic pain

Chronic pain is frequently related to a number of other health conditions including:

It is important to note that chronic pain levels may change for better or worse in response to other factors. The main factors relate to changes in one’s environment and mental-emotional state.

The Chronic Pain Centre Crisis:

Western medicine has fallen short for chronic pain patients to this point.

The main treatment option available for patients suffering with chronic pain is opioid drugs, like morphine.

Chronic pain clinics are now attempting to limit the use of these opioids by reducing patient’s dosages significantly, and even weaning patients off completely. The reason chronic pain clinics are currently being encouraged to reduce the use of these drugs is twofold:

1) Opioids are ineffective in long term treatment.
2) Opioids have many severe side effects associated with their use, including being highly addictive.

At this point most patients are stuck taking these drugs, or are told to live with their pain.
Now that western medicine is facing the crisis associated with over prescribing these drugs, they will be forced to look into new and more helpful ways to treat chronic pain. They will be looking into other treatments, and into lifestyle factors that can positively influence chronic pain management.

At this point most patients are stuck taking these drugs, or are told to live with their pain.

Acupuncture's Role in Chronic Pain Management:

There are many studies showing that acupuncture is an effective treatment option for chronic pain.

One reason why acupuncture is effective for chronic pain is because it stimulates the release of opioids and other peptides in the nervous system, and changes neuroendocrine function. The difference is that the opioids your body releases are good for you, and don’t have side effects; unlike prescription opioids.

It is my hope to see acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine integrate into the western medical model for chronic pain, with the hope of giving the patient the best chance of improving their quality of life.
